Are you a tax resident in Italy? The 183-day rule and the Anagrafe

Premium

Short answer

How Italy decides tax residency, what the Anagrafe registration changes, and why it matters for worldwide income.

Information, not legal advice. MovItaly is not a law firm. Check with the questura or consulate before you act.

Who is this for

Anyone who lives, works or studies in Italy for part of the year, and anyone who keeps a home or income abroad. Tax residency is not the same as your permesso di soggiorno or your residenza anagrafica, although they are related.

Costs and deadlines

There is no fee for being resident. Deadlines are those of the tax return for the year you became resident (see tax-g4-730-vs-redditi-pf). Amounts depend on income and are not stated here.
