Short answer
A short ordered checklist from the airport to your first month.
Information, not legal advice. MovItaly is not a law firm. Check with the questura or consulate before you act.
Who is this for
Anyone who has just landed in Italy.
Steps
Work through these in order. The day numbers are suggested targets to keep you on track, not legal deadlines, unless the linked page says otherwise.
- Day 0-3: get a SIM or eSIM (Get an Italian SIM or eSIM) and save the emergency numbers (Emergency numbers and where to find help).
- Declare your presence if you have no Italian entry stamp (Dichiarazione di presenza: declaring your presence in Italy). Confirm the number of days with your Questura.
- Apply for the permesso di soggiorno if you have a type D visa (Applying for your permesso di soggiorno: where to look).
- Days 1-8: codice fiscale (Get your codice fiscale).
- Find a home safely (Rental contracts in Italy: spot common scams), then register your residence (Register your residence (residenza) at the Comune). Confirm the time limit with your Comune.
- Health service and tessera sanitaria (Register with the national health service and get your tessera sanitaria).
- Bank account (Open an Italian bank account).
- SPID (Activate SPID digital identity), then optionally a PEC (PEC and digital domicile: what they are and whether you need one).
- Start learning Italian (Learning Italian: free CPIA courses).
- Later, if you drive: licence validity and conversion (Driving in Italy: licence validity and conversion).
