Short answer
What the Italian national study visa needs: acceptance, financial means, accommodation and health insurance, and how to apply at the consulate.
Information, not legal advice. MovItaly is not a law firm. Check with the questura or consulate before you act.
Who is this for
Non-EU citizens who will study in Italy for more than 90 days. For stays up to 90 days a short-stay (type C) visa may be enough for non-credit courses; ask the consulate.
Requirements
- Acceptance to a recognised Italian institution (confirmed pre-enrollment on Universitaly).
- Financial means: the Ministry sets a minimum yearly amount per student (a few thousand euros per year, linked to the annual social allowance). Proof can be a bank statement, a scholarship letter, a sponsor's declaration, or a guarantee from a parent or institution. The amount changes yearly. TO VERIFY the current figure.
- Accommodation: a rental contract, a hosting declaration, or a booking at a student residence.
- Health insurance valid in Italy for the visa period and the first months until you can enrol in the national health service (see the health guide).
- Some consulates ask for a return ticket or the means to pay for one, or a criminal record certificate. Ask yours.
